Rev. Jamila Jaye Woods-Jones is a native of Chesilhurst, New Jersey. She migrated to the Washington, DC Metropolitan area in 1981 and later earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science (1990) and a Master of Divinity (1999) degree from Howard University. While at Howard, she received numerous academic scholarships including the 'There is Hope' Scholarship, The Ford Foundation Fellowship, The Marlowe and Howard Stone Anderson Award, the Gerald Durley Award, and two Howard University Trustee Scholarships. Additionally, she earned a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Maryland (2002). While at the University of Maryland (Baltimore), she received the Maryland Delegate Scholarship and was featured in the University of Maryland School of Social Work Recruitment magazine for her hard work and social commitments while a student at the University. She is currently a Licensed Graduate Social Worker employed with the District of Columbia Government.
Reverend Jamila is an Itinerant Elder in the African Methodist Episcopal Church and serves as the Pastor of the Cornerstone African Methodist Episcopal Church of LaPlata (MD). In 2008, Rev. Jamila was voted Third Vice President of the 2 nd Episcopal District AME Women in Ministry. She is a member of the Ministers Alliance of Charles County and Vicinity, the Collective Banking Group, the Prince George's County Chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), and she currently sits on the Charles County Juvenile Drug Court as the clergy representative. On January 13, 2009, Rev. Woods-Jones was sworn in by Maryland State Governor Martin O'Malley to the New Americans Council. More recently, she was elected as a member of the Executive Committee of the Prince George's County Branch of the National Association of the Advancement of Colored People.
Reverend Woods-Jones' musical career includes recording with the Howard Gospel Choir, a live recording with Bishop Thomas Weeks, Sr., and two solo recordings entitled "Can My Gown Be White Again?" and "The Balm," respectively. Her Music Ministry has afforded her the opportunity to minister on programs with Yolanda Adams, Donnie McClurkin, Richard Smallwood, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Irene Cara, Joan Biaz, LaVar Burton, Shirley Ceasar, LaShun Pace, Phyllis Hyman and many more.
Reverend Jamila has been blessed with two children, whom she refers to as her Angels: Gabriel Tyrell and Lyric MiKayla.
Reverend Woods-Jones is both an anointed preacher and teacher of the Gospel and Psalmist. She has traveled throughout the United States (including Hawaii) and internationally (including South Africa), sharing her music ministry, preaching and teaching gifts.
